The new music-focused version of social network MySpace launched last week, and is now available for anyone to join after being in invite only beta mode since July 2012. Under the guidance of majority shareholder Justin Timberlake, the site, whose focus is to connect users through music, has been given a dramatic overhaul, featuring a clean new look with a strong focus on visual content and offers plenty of white space. It includes modern web trend, responsive design, and has some clever user experience touches like the horizontal scroll bar, which is similar to that of Windows 8.The new MySpace features a music player via which users are able to stream music and seamlessly create their own playlists.
Once the darling of the social networking world, MySpace has struggled to maintain relevance in recent times against the popularity of Facebook and Twitter. The revamped MySpace aims to create its own niche by appealing to creative professionals, allowing users to create and publicly share playlists, advertise their musical interests and actively seek out fans and artists with the same passions. Time will tell if MySpace will be able to lure the audience it once had, however the real test might be retaining users once the novelty wears off.
