The search box is considered a standard component of the vast majority of sites on the Internet, however in some scenarios can be difficult to implement for the development team, but is more likely to be frustrating or cumbersome for the site visitor to use, who may end up with poor search results anyway. In response to this problem, Riverfold software founder Manton Reece has created Searchpath, a simple search tool for websites and blogs with an innovative ‘popover’ UI.
This popover UI means that there’s no need to set up a search page, the search results appear in an elegant popover interface, and pages open upon click. “Searchpath knows about blogs — it finds the text on your page to index, and can automatically strip out redundant titles from posts for clearer search results. It tracks popular search terms. It gives you more control, by letting you exclude archive pages and customize the font and links with CSS”, says Reece. The benefits of Searchpath are certainly appealing; other than being easy to embed and offering fast and simple search, there are no annoying ads and the user will stay on your page while searching. The recently launched app is still in its early stages, with more customisation planned, however can be trialed for free with a limit on search results or the full version is available for $8 per month.
